UK government demands clarification on IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu's where about from FG

UK government demands clarification on IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu
The government of the United Kingdom has reportedly written to the Federal government inquiring the where about of one of its citizens, Nnamdi Kanu, who is the leader of the recently proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Press Officer, UK high commission in Nigeria, Joe Abuku, in an interview with Punch, said that the inquiry was sent to ascertain if Kanu who has a British passport, was alive or dead.

Recall that family members and lawyer of the secessionist group leader have alleged that he has been missing since his home in Umuahia, Abia state was "invaded" by the Nigerian military.
“We are seeking urgent clarification from the Nigerian authorities about the status and whereabouts of Mr. Kanu, a British-Nigerian man, who has been reported missing since September 14th,” Abuku said.
Responding to a question on whether the UK government would strip Kanu of his citizenship since the Nigerian government has accused him of leading a terrorist organization, Abuku said it does not comment on individual cases and that under the UK laws, IPOB is not recognized as a terrorist group.
“One of the conditions that can make the United Kingdom strip its citizen of nationality is if the person engages in a terrorist activity at home or abroad. And Kanu has dual citizenship and therefore a citizen of Nigeria and the UK. The Indigenous People of Biafra is not a proscribed organization in the UK,” he said.

Police officer shoots a 'suicidal' hospital prisoner dead after he points a Taser at him

A police officer has shot an allegedly suicidal hospital prisoner dead after the man pointed a Taser at him and a nurse.
Bodycam footage shows the horrific moment prisoner, Cody O'Bryan, is killed with one shot after trying to use the stun gun on hospital staff and officers.
Las Vegas Metro Police are now investigating why the 31-year-old man was left in a room alone with a bag which contained the stun gun, and why he had not been properly restrained to his hospital bed.
Officers received a call from O'Bryan on Sunday when he called the emergency services and claimed he was feeling suicidal.
He said he was going to "blast it out with officers" and alleged that he had a loaded pistol on his person.
After attending the scene, officers discovered that O'Bryan had a warrant from parole and probation for gross misdemeanour and attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, prompting them to arrest him.
The prisoner points the Taser at a nurse and security guard before turning it on the officer
Officer Rybacki fires one shot into the room
He was initially taken to the Clark County Detention Centre, but when it was deemed that O'Bryan was too intoxicated, he was taken to the University Medical Center by Officer Thomas Rybacki.
After arriving at the hospital , a corrections officer dropped off a duty bag in the hospital room, to be used by the relief officer upon their arrival.
It contained restraints, a radio and a Taser.
The bag was placed under a sink while the prisoner was restrained by his wrist and ankle to the hospital bed.
O'Bryan urinated on himself during the elapsed time which meant his hospital sheets and clothing needed to be changed.
Officer Rybacki helped him into a hospital gown but this time only restrained O'Bryan's right ankle to the bed.
Rybacki then left the room for a short time, leaving the duty bag under the sink.
O'Bryan got out of bed and laid on the floor with his head next to the bag.
O'Bryan was pronounced dead at the scene
The Taser discarded on the floor of the hospital room
At 4.04am, he managed to remove the Taser from the bag and hide it from officers.
Just one minute later, Officer Rybacki was back in the room and removed the bag, placing it in the hospital corridor.
When a nurse and security guard entered the room five minutes later, O'Bryan pulled out the Taser and pointed it at the nurse before turning it on Rybacki.
Rybacki told O'Bryan to drop the Taser and stepped out of the room, before briefly stepping back in and firing one shot.
O'Bryan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Metro Police said O'Bryan had been trying to pull the trigger on the Taser, not realised a safety mechanism engaged.
They said due to the Taser's ability to leave a person incapacitated, it would have been extremely dangerous if used on police officer in this situation.
An investigation has now been launched.
Metro Police said in a statement: "There will never be another duty bag placed in a room with a prisoner in the hospital."

JUST IN : Obasanjo mocks Buhari, says president too slow in fulfilling electoral promises

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo [Photo credit: Ventures Africa]
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised the slow pace at which the present administration of Muhammadu Buhari is taking to fulfill its promises to Nigerians.
The former president said this in an interview with African Arguments magazine, and stressed that President Buhari had not done enough for Nigerians especially in employment creation for the youth.
”All youth in Nigeria have legitimate reasons to feel frustrated and angry. Buhari has made some announcements. He has tried to keep on going in the area of agribusiness, but not enough. It is not yet enough to prepare the ground for uninhibited growth of the economy, which we need,” Mr. Obasanjo said.
He said the president can do more to empower the youth and advised that if youth empowerment, skill acquisition, youth employment, and education are provided, “the ticking bomb of possible youth explosion out of restiveness and anger will subside.”
Mr. Obasanjo also criticised those agitating for the sovereign state of Biafra, saying ”they do not know why they are doing so.”
“The protesters don’t even know what the struggle is all about, but if it gives them false hope, why not hang onto it? Let the elders handle it or ignore it until it loses momentum,” he said.
Mr. Obasanjo said there are many elders in every community who are still respected, “after all, they’re their (youth’s) fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers, and can still be used effectively.”
Speaking about federalism, Mr. Obasanjo said he ”does not not believe in it” and that those talking about devolution of powers and true federalism ”don’t know what they are talking about.”
He said, “I don’t believe in true federalism. What is true federalism? Why are they not accountable? What powers do they not have?”
The former president claimed some state governors are ”more powerful than President Muhammad Buhari or any other Nigerian President.”
“If anybody tells you they want devolution or true federalism, he doesn’t know what he is talking about. The fact anybody talks about it doesn’t mean it’s right,” he said.
He also spoke on reports that he had just N20,000 in his account before he became president in 1999, yet went on to become one of the richest Nigerians alive.
He said ”he was already a wealthy man before he became president and that even then he had the largest poultry farm in Africa then.”
Mr. Obasanjo has been on tour to promote his new book, Making Africa Work, which he describes as “a guide to improving Africa’s capacity for economic growth and job creation.”

Why new pension bill must be dropped – SGF, NLC

House of Reps
The Office of Secretary to Government of the Federation, SGF, and some stakeholders have opposed the proposed exemption of para-military organisations from the contributory pension scheme.
The OSGF made its position known at the public hearing organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Pension on a Bill to exclude personnel of paramilitary and anti-graft agencies from the contributory pension scheme.
Representative of the OSGF, Roy Ogor, disclosed that the white paper issued by the Federal Government, prohibited all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, and paramilitary outfits from pulling out of the contributory pension scheme.
He explained that the provisions of the exemption bill contravenes federal government’s position, so it should be jettisoned.
Mr. Ogor urged the National Assembly to jettison any proposed legislation that could further compound the socio-economic predicaments of the country and Nigerian workers,
He also noted that status quo should be maintained to enable the public and private employers to meet their 18 per cent pension obligations as encapsulated in Pension Reform Act, 2014.
He lamented that public and private employees were currently struggling to comply with the current contribution of 18 per cent as the lingering economic recession affects both public and private employers.
He, however said that rather than the proposed amendment which seeks to exempt paramilitary personnel, the Pension Reform Act has provision for increase in pension contribution by employers.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, and other stakeholders have warned against the return of corruption riddled era of Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS).
Mr. Dogara urged the committee and all stakeholders at the public hearing to examine the bill critically.
“We are conscious of the fact that the pension industry has become a crucial sector that is playing a formidable role towards the development of the economy in terms of availability of huge investment funds of about N6.4 trillion.”
He said money provided by the scheme could be deployed both in the real sector as well as in the capital market sector.
On his part, Nigeria Labour Council, NLC, President, Ayuba Wabba, said that the Federal Government had in excess N1.6 trillion pension liabilities under the DBS when the CPS was introduced in 2004.
Chairman, House committee on Pension, Hassan Shekarau, in his remarks, informed the stakeholders that the 33 per cent pension arrears had been paid to personnel of Nigeria Customs Service; Nigeria Prisons Service; and Nigerian Immigration Service.
Earlier on Thursday, a labour leader, Issa Aremu, said Pension Reform Acts of 2004 and 2014, were ”outcomes of executive bills which addressed the delicate interests of the pensioners, government and the economy.”
Mr. Aremu, a national executive committee member of NLC, said that the new bill was informed by “narrow and vested interest consideration” and cannot do justice to all.
The labour leader also said any private member bill which seeks to erode the gains of the 13-year-old N7 trillion Contributory Pension Scheme in terms of coverage and resource pools is “counterproductive” and should not be encouraged.
He said pensions of the nation’s working men and women in security services are better secured in a national contributory scheme than the old “unfunded and unsustainable discredited” Defined Benefits Scheme, DBS.
According to him, until the recent contributory pension reform, “all stakeholders bore witness to ugly features of corruption, inefficiency and share looting,” which he claimed characterized the old DBS.
The labour leader said that to return to the old era means, “bringing back corruption to pension administration through the National Assembly.”

Coca-Cola invented a new drink and caffeine addicts love it - but its name is a bit weird

Love Coca-Cola? Adore coffee? Ever wondered what the two would be like combined together? No, us neither.
But clearly someone has because the fizzy pop giant has just introduced the snappily-titled Coca-Cola Plus Coffee No Sugar.
It’s a mash-up of the seminal soft drink with the added hint of Brazilian java. And at 14mg of caffeine per 100ml, it has more kick than normal Coke (which has 9mg) but way less wake-up ingredients that you ‘d get in, say, an average cappuccino (43mg).
Nevertheless, for caffeine addicts it’s certainly cause to get excited - although those who've tried it don't quite know how they feel.

Some were feeling kind of ashamed that they liked it.

Others didn't mind it.

Then there was total taste confusion.

Anyway, you'd need to be jonesing for a hit in order to get hold of the stuff because you can only get it in Japan with Australia getting it for a limited period soon.
Perhaps most significantly, however, is the fact that it’s sugar free, following the lead of other soft drink manufacturers in dropping the saccharine in light of concerns over public health and the growing obesity scare.
So, while a couple of can might have you jacked up to the nines and jabbering wild-eyed and ten to the dozen, at least your teeth will look immaculate.

A Letter To Nnamdi Kanu By Reuben Abati

I sincerely hope you would get to read this letter wherever you may be, that is assuming you are still alive.
We have never met. I only know you by reputation and I have had cause in the last year to write on your activities within the public arena and offer my own views about you, your persona, and your interventions in the Nigerian debate. I sincerely hope you would get to read this letter wherever you may be, that is assuming you are still alive.
Your father’s house was recently invaded by the Nigerian military (surprised you don’t have a house of your own!). We were later told that you simply disappeared into thin air, along with your parents. The murderous Operation Python Dance II that was unleashed on Igboland by the Federal Government of Nigeria has since become a subject of national interest. Many people have proclaimed that you have been killed, abducted and that many members of your family and movement – the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have been wasted. Some people said you were called The Lion, but when trouble came, you were the first to run away from the zoo.
You had boasted that you will deal with any invading force from Abuja. You also said it would be “Biafra or Death”. But when death came calling in the shape of Operation Python Dance II, your enemies insisted that you should have waited. Don’t mind them, oh. I have defended you in another piece where I argued that it is probably better to run away so you can live to fight another day. Of course, it is not every revolutionary that runs away.
Che Guevara died in the struggle, and Martin Luther King, Patrice Lumumba, and so on. Nelson Mandela was jailed for life, but he lived to tell the story. In your case, the way the Nigerian state has been carrying on, it is clear they don’t want you to tell any more stories. You have been charged for treason. You have now been labeled a terrorist. Your organization has been proscribed, and labeled an enemy of the Nigerian state. A week after soldiers stormed your state, neighborhood and home, the Nigerian Air Force began to drop its men from helicopters all over Igboland. They call it show of force.
I guess all of that is to let you and your men know that wherever you are, the Nigerian state is determined to hunt you down. If you are on land, they will grab you. If you hide in the skies, the Air Force will bring you down. And if you hide in the seas, the Nigerian Navy and the Amphibious Brigade of the Nigeria Army will fish you out.
Officially, we have been told that you and IPOB are worse than violent herdsmen and the Boko Haram who have killed thousands of Nigerians in the last year alone. The Boko Haram has been declared the fourth most violent group in the world, but the Nigerian government insists that you pose a greater threat. In fact, a government spokesperson sounded as if there is a secret plan in place to give herdsmen and the Boko Haram national honors.
There is probably something that the Nigerian government and state actors know that we do not know. You were dealing with the charge of treason, now there is the additional allegation of terrorism. Don’t ever deceive yourself that if you get arrested again, you’d be released, except perhaps you change your identity and claim that you are now a herdsman or a member of the Boko Haram. There may be many people who have Nicodemus access to you who may be telling you to come and confront the Nigerian state.  That is how Nigerians sweet-tongue people to their death. I am sure that by now, from your hiding place, you would have learnt some lessons.
The Nigerian state may be against you, but the people you really have to fear are the same people you claim to be leading, that is the same people who used to call you messiah and who followed you about, kneeling before you and kissing the ground on which you walked. Of what use is a change-agent without committed followers? Of what use is a revolution without the people’s buy-in? Of what use is an ideology without foot-soldiers? The moment the Federal Government activated Operation Python II, most of the people who used to support you have gone completely silent.  The Biafra Secret Service is nowhere to be seen. The Biafra National Guard threw away its uniform. Some of those boys who used to wave the Biafran flag and wear the Biafran cap have thrown them away too. One or two persons are still issuing statements on behalf of IPOB, but even those statements sound like they were issued from business centers.  Your own kinsmen have called you a tyrant and an opportunist. Many of them have written social media pieces advising the Federal Government to deal with you, because you don’t listen to advice.  They even say you are not a true revolutionary but a gold-digger.
In all manner of ways, the Governors of the five Igbo states are using you to play politics. They have declared IPOB an illegal organization. They are openly abusing you. All the big men in Igbo land are as quiet as the dead sea. Igbo traditional rulers have refused to support your father who is their colleague. Some of them have in fact asked the Abia state Governor to withdraw his certificate and staff of office and appoint another person in his place. Even the big men who signed your bail documents have refused to defend you.  You used to boast about international support for the Biafran cause.  It has been said that the government now knows some “treasury looters” and international groups who are funding you and that IPOB accounts have been traced to some countries, particularly France. The French and the Turkish promptly distanced themselves from you. But the European Union and the United States spoke nicely. America says IPOB is not a terrorist organization and America will know.
But the Nigerian government that may not know half of what America knows is insisting that it is now a crime for anybody, even as young as five years old to identify with Biafra, regardless of the Constitutional right to the freedom of speech and association and the right to self-determination enshrined in the UN Charter.  Indeed, it would appear as if the Nigerian Government has been able to break the spine of your movement, at least for now, and certainly, the way things are, the November 18 election in Anambra state will take place – with or without you. If anybody expected that there would be a massive protest in the South East over the treatment that has been meted out to you, that has not quite happened. All the markets in the South East are open; Igbo traders across Nigeria have moved on with their businesses. Life is so normal in the South East, the Nigerian military is dancing and beating its chest.
Northern and South Eastern Governors are holding meetings and congratulating each other. You turned 50 yesterday, apart from a few messages on social media, everywhere was quiet in the South-East. If this had been a month ago, the crowd that would have gathered at your doorstep would have stretched from Isiama Afara to Afikpo, and the cakes you would have received would have been uncountable. Rochas Okorocha recently got 27 birthday cakes, presented by 27 women, representing the same number of local governments in Imo State, you probably would have received a cake from every local government in the entire South East!
Since your disappearance there has also been little talk about self-determination or Biafra among Igbos. The sound of the narrative is gradually changing. There is more talk these days about Igbo marginalization, and the need to appoint Igbos into offices. One prominent Northerner from Kaduna has since gone to Chatham House in the UK to say Igbos should not complain about marginalization when they didn’t vote for President Buhari in 2015, and that it is foolish for any Nigerian to expect to reap where he or she did not sow. Nnamdi, you’d be surprised that appointment-seeking Igbos will mobilize your people, including your followers, to vote massively for the same people who are currently hounding you, in 2019.  You can be sure this will happen. In fact some people are already boasting that the only way to have peace in Nigeria is to make an Igbo man President or Vice President in 2019. While you were shouting “Biafra or death”, some people were eyeing the business and political side of things. Every proposed revolution often runs into its own contradictions.
But don’t worry. It may be fashionable now to criticize Nnamdi Kanu but the wisdom of the mob is not always the best guide. I sincerely hope that you are alive, and that you’d not end up as an Abogunrin. Not every man has the opportunity to witness what life would be like after his own funeral. Treachery is one of those unsavory ingredients of the change process. The deserters of the cause would claim they prefer to survive. The coffin maker prays fervently for business but he would never wish that his own family members should die. But take heart, hope is not lost. The fire that you have lit will continue to burn. Your struggle speaks directly to the subject of the national question. You have reminded all and sundry that Nigeria remains a troubled country and that there are many unresolved issues. Every effort has been made to kill your voice, and your movement, but the ideas that you have forced out of the cupboard will continue to resonate.
The good news also is that there are Nigerians in the diaspora who have taken up the struggle. They went to demonstrate at the 72nd United Nations General Assembly in New York and on the streets of London.  Your friends, FFK and Ayo Fayose are still standing by you. There are many others out there who also do not agree that you are a terrorist, even if they do not agree with your methods and rhetoric. You have also exposed the hypocrisy of the Igbo elite. You have exposed the desperation of the ruling class. Don’t let your head swell, though. If I must tell you the truth, you over-acted. Too much acting dey spoil cinema. You paid too much attention to ceremony. You were obsessed with your own heroism.
As you read this piece and reflect on your life at 50, let me remind you of the following statement which you made on August 27, 2017:
“Where we are is Biafra land. Aba is the spiritual capital of Biafra land. We started in Aba in 2015 at CKC. That day, heaven authenticated our move that IPOB will restore Biafra and that’s what we have come to do. We died in Aba at National High School. They shot and killed us in other places in Biafra land where they were protesting for my release. As our people rest in the grave, we’ll never rest until Biafra is restored. I don’t care what they say in Abuja. I don’t give a damn what they say in Lagos. I’m a Biafran and we are going to crumble the zoo. Some idiots who are not educated said that they’ll arrest me, and I ask them to come, I’m in Biafra. If any of them leaves Biafra land alive, know that this is not IPOB. Tell them what I said. Tell Buhari that I am in Aba and any person who comes to arrest Nnamdi Kanu in Biafra land will die here. I’ll never go on exile I assure you.  Some people talk about restructuring, are we doing the restructuring of Nigeria now? Are we doing fiscal Federalism? Are we doing devolution? What we want is Biafra! Forget all the nonsense they write about us. We are not slowing down and no man born of a woman can stop us…”
Words on marble, Mazi Kanu, these are strong words on marble… Whatever happens, the fight of the python and the lion is a defining moment for Nigeria.

JAMB Says Politicians Should Send Their Children To Nigerian Universities

few days ago, social media became flooded with pictures of some prominent politicians in Nigeria going to celebrate the graduation of their wards in far away universities such as the United Kingdom.
While the graduations called for a celebration, many Nigerians condemned the trend in which our politicians preach “buy or consume made-in-Nigeria” while they do the exact opposite.
Others equally argued that this trend is why the Nigerian education sector seems to be neglected, with the frequent resultant strikes, like the one just called off last week by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU. However, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has urged the elites, or politicians to encourage their dependents to obtain their first degree in Nigeria before going for further studies abroad.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede gave the advice in Abuja on Friday while speaking with newsmen. The registrar was speaking on the sidelines of a workshop on intensive Training and Sensitisation Forum on Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) for the 2017/2018 academic session.
According to him, it will be worthwhile for the children to obtain the first degree in the country where the public and private institutions are of high quality and standard rather than study abroad at institutions that are of poor quality and low standard.
"It is better for the elite in Nigeria to let their wards and children attend universities, higher institutions in Nigeria, at least for the first degree, but if they wish to go for Masters, Ph.D. and so on elsewhere, there is nothing bad about that."
“But for the first degree, we have enough universities here – both public and private because when most of them go outside Nigeria to study, they do that at private institutions."
“And I know countries in Africa where Nigerian students constitute 90 percent of the class in every set as if those institutions were set up for Nigerians."
“What we are saying is that you have better value if you send your children to private universities in Nigeria than sending them to study at private universities of poor quality outside Nigeria,’’ he said.
Mr. Oloyede called on owners of private universities to consider the economic situation in the country and make tuition fees affordable for parents. He said that the institutions were operating in a competitive world and that failure to check the excessive increase in tuition fees could force many of the schools to close shop.
“I believe that private institutions are established for a worthy purpose."
“I also believe that private institutions’ charges are high, but they are not as high as traveling outside the country and people still send a large number of students to inferior universities."
"If you care I will show you on my telephone, I was in Uganda, I was in a number of African countries about a month ago, and if you see the condition; I am disturbed by the fact that not only that the conditions were not conducive, but also because 90 percent of the students are from Nigeria."
“In some cases, you find them under tents taking courses," he lamented.

Man made to drink water used in bathing brother
A man in Delta state was made to drink water used in washing his brother's corpse to prove he had no hand in the death of his brother.
According to Sapele Oghenek, it was family members who compelled him to drink the corpse water. If he is innocent, he will not be affected by the water but if he played a part in his brother's death, there will be consequences after drinking the water.
The poster wrote: "Report enter studio say na last weekend dem go bury Mechuko for deir village.
