On Friday, Billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer announced that he plans to spend millions of dollars in a new campaign aimed at convincing Congress to impeach President Donald Trump.
The campaign, called “Need to Impeach,” kicked off on Friday with a video ad that will run on TV and online. In the ad, Steyer argues that Trump has “obstructed justice” and “brought us to the brink of nuclear war,” as video rolls of North Korean President Kim Jong-un and a missile.
In the advert, Steyer says “a Republican Congress once impeached a president for far less,” referring to the 1998 impeachment of President Bill Clinton for lying to a grand jury about having sex with a White House intern.
“Yet today people in Congress and his own administration know this president is a clear and present danger who is mentally unstable and armed with nuclear weapons. And they do nothing” he said.
According to a statement from the campaign., Steyer is spending at least $11 million on the ad, in an “eight-figure national television buy and a seven-figure digital ad buy”.
