Hold Okocha responsible for all the deaths in Eke Ukwu market- PDP says

PDP says Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, should be held responsible for all the deaths during the demolition of Eke Ukwu market in Owerri yesterday August 26th. Read a statement from the party below
1. We condemn the Forceful Demolition of the Popular Eke Ukwu Market and violent eviction of traders in Owerri by the Imo State Government using men of the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies during which three (3) people including a 10 year old child were extra-judicially murdered and several other people were injured.
2. This violent eviction is all the more condemnable because it was carried out in violation of a pending Order granted by an Imo State High Court restraining the Imo State Government from demolishing the Market and Evicting the Traders.
3. This action, sadly, follows a pattern of the Use of the Apparatus of State Security to forcefully and violently carry out evictions of ordinary Nigerians from valuable property in blatant violation of Court Orders. Not very long ago, the Lagos State Government ordered the Forceful Eviction of indigent Nigerians from waterfront properties to enable it enter into joint venture agreements for the Construction of luxury apartments. Like the Owerri incident, this eviction led to the deaths of at least two (2) people and the Injury of several others, including women and children.
4. As much as we acknowledge the deals of Development and the Construction of critical infrastructure, these ideals must be pursued within the confines of respect for the Rule of Law as well as in a humane manner that preserves the dignity of indigent Nigerians while giving them viable and affordable alternatives regarding where to live, grow and trade.
5. Unfortunately, the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not recognise such valuable ideals and as such, continues to design, promote and pursue anti-people policies.
6. We call for the Immediate Investigation of these extra-judicial murders and for the Culprits to be brought to book. Only such an action will give justice to the Dead and discourage the Use of the Police and other security agencies as tools fo further oppression of ordinary Nigerians.
7. May God rest the dead.

Anambra APC Primaries:No Candidate Has Been Endorsed

Image result for apc logo
The media team of Senator Andy Uba for Governor 2017 has debunked the statements flying in the media that certain aspirants have been endorsed as untrue.
In a statement put out by his media office, Uba debunked the claim describing it as laughable.
" We have been inundated with statements that certain candidates in the space of a few hours from the commencement of the primaries have been endorsed, is it by the presidency or the National Executive as the candidate of the APC for November 18 elections?
This statement is laughable as well as false owing to the fact that the true situation of things now favour an Uba candidacy.
However, owing to our principal's decision to abide by the rules of the game we have continued to keep faith with the system by allowing them to vote their candidate of choice.
We urge Ndi Anambra to thus disregard any claims of anyone as an annointed or endorsed candidate without the votes of the delegates."

SHOCKING REVELATION: Budget endorsed for Anambra Election by Prince Arthur Eze and Hon. Tony Nwoye

. Image
It is a known fact to the entire Anambarians that Prince Arthur Eze is the Godfather of Hon. Tony Nwoye in this Anambra Governorship Election. God-fatherism act has been criticized constructively by all Anambarians. The photo above shows the budget signed by Tony and Arthur Eze for the Anambra Election. All Anambarians should take note of the total sum to be spent. How on earth do you think Tony Nwoye will pay his godfather back? Will he pay back this money from his personal savings or from the state fund? Anambarians should vote wisely and kick against god-fatherism.

IPOB Dares Federal Government To Rearrest Nnamdi Kanu

The secessionist group, Indigenous Peoples Of Biafra (IPOB), has dared the Federal Government of Nigeria to attempt to re-arrest its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
IPOB’s challenge came as a response to an appeal by Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, asking for the revocation of a court order that granted bail to Mr. Kanu. The minister also advocated the re-arrest and detention of the IPOB leader pending the determination of the charges against him.
The Attorney General cited Mr. Kanu’s violation of his bail conditions as one of the major reasons the secessionist agitator should be arrested.
Reacting to the minister’s position, IPOB accused the Federal Government of playing politics, adding that Mr. Kanu could never be rearrested. The group also vowed that many tragic events would happen if Nigerian authorities ever rearrested the IPOB leader.
“IPOB is not doing anything about the order of [the Federal Government] through the Attorney General to revoke [a] court order and arrest Nnamdi Kanu again. We are just watching and waiting to see what is going to happen and how it will happen,” the secessionist group stated.
IPOB added, “Think about what his re-arrest would cause in Nigeria. The FG is just playing politics. They cannot arrest Nnamdi Kanu. This is not the first time they would be calling for his re-arrest. Nevertheless, a lot of people have written articles stating the tragic that will happen if he is rearrested.”
IPOB restated its advice to all Igbo to leave the Northern part of Nigeria on or before October 1, 2017. It warned Igbo resident in the northern part of Nigeria not to fall into a trap set by Northerners.
In April, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to Mr. Kanu who is facing trial for alleged treason. The bail, which was granted on health grounds, came with certain conditions, including stipulations that the secessionist leader should not address rallies, grant interviews, or be at a gathering of more than 10 people.

Mr. Kanu has since been addressing huge crowds of people who support his agitation for an independent republic of Biafra.

IPOB rejects withdrawal of Igbo quit notice

IPOB members in a rally
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has rejected the withdrawal of the quit notice issued to the Igbos by the Coalition of Northern Groups.
The coalition had ordered the Igbos to leave the north on or before October 1, 2017, but a suspension of the notice was announced on Thursday by the group’s spokesperson Abdulazeez Suleiman, at a press briefing at the Transcorp Hilton hotel in Abuja.
But a statement issued by the IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, on Friday, said the withdrawal was inconsequential as far as their aspirations were concerned.
“It is inconsequential to IPOB whether the ‘quit notice’ was rescinded or not because it will in no way impact the pace and direction of our effort to restore Biafra. If they had any honour, they will ‘stick to it,’’ he said.
”Threats don’t have any effect on us, so our advice to the Arewa North is to please stick to the October 1 deadline or else they have no honour. We urge all Southerners in the core North to return home before October 1 as history will most definitely repeat itself,” he added.
He said Southerners (living in the North) must be vigilant despite the assurances given by the coalition.
”Southerners were massacred in the pogroms of 1966 and 1967 after similar assurances were issued then that people should remain in the North. The presence of a serving governor and senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during the supposed press briefing confirms what we have always known that the incitement to genocide, which is what the ‘quit notice’ is all about has the blessing of the Arewa political class.’’
IPOB also had verbal barbs for President Muhammadu Buhari.
”If President Muhammadu Buhari is at all serious about clamping down on hate speech, he should arrest those behind the ‘quit notice’ along with their sponsors.
”Trying to drag the name of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, into their unintelligent blood feast will be resisted. If the idea is to cow our leader with calls for his arrest, then those behind the genocidal edict of ‘Igbos must leave the North’ are even dumber than we thought.’’

Why Nnamdi Kanu’s bail should be revoked – Nigerian Government

Nnamdi Kanu [Photo: TODAY.ng]
The Nigerian government on Friday demanded the revocation of the bail granted the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, in April.
In a statement on Thursday signed by Salihu Isah, an aide to the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, the Nigerian government hinged its request on 11 grounds of arguments.
According to the statement, the Nigerian government accused Mr. Kanu of ‘totally violating’ the 12 main conditions he was demanded to comply with by Justice Binta Nyako at an Abuja Division of the Federal High Court on April 25.
Citing some of Mr. Kanu’s bail conditions, the prosecution said the defendant negated the conditions and acted in ways that allegedly have adverse effect on the nation’s security.
“Among other conditions for the bail of the 1st defendant are as follows: “That he should not be seen in a crowd exceeding 10 people.
“That he should not grant any press interviews, hold or attend any rallies;
“And that he should file in court medical updates of his health status every month.”
The government said that the bail conditions were perfected by the defendant/applicant which he is currently enjoying.

Update from APC primaries In Anambra

Report reaching us says the toughest contest from the APC Primary Election ground is between Senator Andy Uba and Hon. Tony Nwoye, meaning a battle between 2 persons that were all in PDP. One is a dependent and a stooge to a kingmaker who will not put his money where his mouth will not chop. Tony Nwoye is a political investment coming from Chief Arthur Eze. The fact is known to all that Tony lives in Arthur Eze's house in Abuja and worships his godfather. Is this the kind of Governor the People of Anambra have sent the delegates to give them? No, not at this critical time when Anambra stands a chance of leading other states in the South East region into new economic heaven. Who else is in position to make this dream come true if not the one who was instrumental to making 15 billionaires way back in Obasanjo's days! Andy Uba is a natural kingmaker himself, he is an ingenious politician who had done enough to the country and still has the humility to make the state as the best by the clout he command on the best business men in Nigeria. His influence in the National Assembly is unmatchable and is an asset to Anambra State. He does not depend on anyone nor he makes any deal to sell the state to any desperate and greedy political merchant.

In this critical moment, let us reason and eschew political sentiments powered by the interest of unpatriotic elements full of selfishness. Let Anambra decide for us today and for the future generation. Andy is the answer today, Tony and his godfather are to think and allow the right person to emerge in the interest the entire people of Anambra State.

Pass this message across until it gets to the APC Delegates at the Primary Election Ground in Anambra.

God bless Anambra State!!!

THIS MESSAGE IS FROM THE "CUSTODIANS OF TRUE VALUES OF IGBO LAND" FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANAMBRA STATE.

INTERVIEW (PART 2): APGA no longer relevant in Igboland – ex-Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka

Former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka
In the second part of this interview, Osita Chidoka speaks on ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s ‘third term’ bid. He also speaks on his aspiration to govern Anambra and other political matters.
Read the first part of the interviewhere.
Excerpts:

Chidoka: Succession planning is a major thing in Nigeria. I think that the choice of President Obasanjo’s successor again failed to observe the principle of ideological coherence. He was not ideologically on the same page with Yar’Adua. Yar’Adua’s world view tendencies, aspirations, mindset were totally antithetical to what Obasanjo represented. So, Obasanjo fell back to maybe family relationship with the Yar’Adua’s, loyalty of Umaru Yar’Adua to him, without underscoring that Obasanjo government was a fundamentally ideological government. That got into the Washington consensus and modified it to suit Nigerian environment. So, whether you talked about the privatisation programme they pursued vehemently, the monetisation process, civil service reforms, the public sector reforms, banking consolidation, insurance, the pension commission and all that, the robust sense of our national history, our national trajectory in foreign relations, the way he engaged African states, the western world, G8…… Obasanjo became the African leader to go to. Whenever there was a crisis in Africa, people came back to Nigeria. I knew that he was bringing in somebody who did not share those ideological world views with Obasanjo? And I argued this with him. So, it was a matter of weeks when he took over power that the problem started. It was instant because there were fundamental decisions that he needed to take and he pushed back on them. The privatisation of the refineries, the moment he assumed office, he cut it; removal of the toll gate and the inclusion of the five per cent charge, increase of the fuel price, to put the road tax on it, he removed it. The Lagos-Kano railway line, he said it was overpriced and all that, ok negotiate it down, review the contract but he backed out from it. And this was a time Nigeria had almost $60 billion in foreign reserve. So, Nigeria could dream big dreams. The Lagos-Kano rail line would have unleashed so much energy in the economy. It would have reduced the numbers of tankers in our highway. I knew that Yar’Adua was not ideologically on the same page with President Obasanjo.
Sadly, whether President Obasanjo agrees with this or not, his fundamental mistake in Nigeria has been his own ability to identify his ideological soul mate and stay with them despite personal differences. He allows his personal differences with people to block his mind on the issue of the fundamental philosophy of Nigeria. How do we want Nigeria to run? That is the major issue in Nigeria. Where do people stand on the issue pertaining to Nigeria? So, this is what is creating the problem. Whether you say that the solution to Nigeria is anti-corruption, the solution to Nigeria is rule of law like Yar’Adua came up with, the fundamental question is how do we unlock the potentials of Nigeria? What economic model should we pursue? What social policy should we pursue to ensure inclusion, inclusiveness and the growth of a Nigeria nation where no man is oppressed?
PT:  So, you were pushing Obasanjo mindset in the Yar’Adua government, was that why they came after you?
Chidoka: I am sure they knew that I fundamentally opposed to the choice of Yar’Adua as president; not because it mattered. But I argued that this person seems not to be in line with all the plans and thinking and the thoughts we had with Obasanjo about the future of Nigeria. I thought he was choosing the wrong person to lead that dream. Because Obasanjo was leaving Nigeria in a strong place, a robust national economy in terms of foreign reserves. Debt profile was at its lowest point in Nigeria. We had gotten the Paris debt written off, we had gotten our foreign reserves, excess crude account, fiscal responsibility bill had been passed, all kinds of measures had been put in place. The pension issue that was a major elephant issue in Nigeria was attacked and the process in place to replace it with the contributory pension scheme. So, I thought what Nigeria needed was another person who thought like Obasanjo, who was a person driven by markets fundamental economics and more importantly by a sense of national inclusion to lead Nigeria to the next level.
PT: You were very close to Obasanjo and it is believed that you were among some of his boys he used for the third term campaign. What really happened? What role did you play and why did it crumble?
Chidoka: As much as I know, I never had any conversation with Obasanjo about the third term agenda. As much as I know.
PT: But El-Rufai said you were in several committees?
Chidoka: The committees were to reform the PDP. The committees were to provide a new, to document the intellectual trajectory of the government. I never had any conversation with Obasanjo on third term. I can say it on oath, Obasanjo never told me and never discussed with me about third term. In fact, the closest we came to having that conversation was the day the constitution amendment failed in the Senate. Obasanjo called me from Paris, he was in Paris on that day. He called in from Paris that afternoon and said that we should speed up the work on the reform of the PDP and that we should get ready for the conventions, and all that. The manifesto, he called me to find out that afternoon after the thing had failed in the Senate. I was not privy to any plan for Obasanjo to continue his stay in office because there were two things why I thought that was not possible. I didn’t think a constitution can be amended retroactively and even if the constitution was amended, I don’t think that Obasanjo was going to benefit from it. So, I didn’t see how the constitution will be amended to allow a president to run a third term and Obasanjo will be qualified for that.
PT: Let’s return to your ambition to rule Anambra State. Of course, you have analysed the point that a party is as popular as its opponent can make it to be nowadays. APGA would have been in power in Anambra for 12 years by the time the incumbent governor finishes his tenure. And it is quite a popular party there than the UPP. How do you want to dislodge such a party with a long history?
Chidoka: APGA was a party founded in 2003. If you remember in 2003 the atmosphere in the country was such that ethnic tension arose – the Niger Delta people protesting the northerners talking about Sharia, and all kinds of issues, Igbos talking about Biafra, MASSOB etc. It was at that time that APGA was born. And APGA was supposed to be a political engagement strategy of Igbos to engage the country, to organise Igbo land and divert the ethnic tensions into the election. What has happened is that in its course to rise to power, it failed in that mission. First of all, they had Ojukwu as a presidential candidate in 2003. In 2007, I believe, Ojukwu ran as a presidential candidate and then in 2011 APGA said they will not field any presidential candidate and that they were going with PDP. In 2015, they did not present a presidential candidate. So, APGA got soaked in and remained only in Anambra state and was not able to become the aggregator of the Igbo voice and Igbo tension and the channel that Igbo people have been looking for. APGA failed to aggregate, to even have a world view, to even express a position on what has today become the agitations from Igbo land. If it had been successful, in aggregating Igbo views and expressing it and engaging the country, there would have been no IPOB today. In fact, all the people in IPOB, and I can say this…. even Nnamdi Kanu, wanted to run for House of Representatives under APGA. All of them were supporters of APGA at that time, 2007 and 2011 back then. So, it was the failure of APGA to aggregate this world view that led to this groups becoming more radical and becoming the darling of the younger generation.
Because, every Igbo man feels there is need for the Igbos to engage the country to open up opportunities for them. We are asking for equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. This is because once there are equal opportunities, the mission has to have a benchmark. For instance, if you have a federal government college exam, and the benchmark is that everybody must score at least 50 per cent to get an admission into the school, it won’t matter whether a state has 51 per cent as their cut off mark and another state has 90 per cent. But when the cut off mark is reduced below the pass mark to accommodate people, then that’s no more federal character. That is now enthronement of mediocrity.  So, people that scored 120 in exam, for instance in Anambra, can’t get in because cut off mark is 128 and somebody that scores 90 from another state can get in. So, these are the issues that the Igbos would have loved to see APGA represent. As we speak today, APGA has no position on the issue of Biafra, on the issue of agitation, on the issue of restructuring. They have not expressed any view to the country because when I looked at the letter that Nasir El-Rufai wrote to President Buhari telling him to expand his government, to be more inclusive, to pursue reforms and all that, I thought that letter should have been written by an Igbo governor. I thought the governors have an opportunity to sit down with the president and say ‘president, you are in violation of our federal character laws in your appointment. It is not a wish it is not about five per cent and 95 per cent, it is the law and you are on oath as the president not to ill-treat anybody or treat with favouritism, you swore to an oath to treat every Nigerian equally, once you become president your partisan view, your personal world view must give way to the job of president of Nigeria.’ I thought it was an Igbo governor that should be reminding the president of that. So, that is why the Igbo young people feel alienated; they feel that their political elite have not spoken out for them. What I want the government of Anambra to represent is that we need to engage the country peacefully, but engage constructively, to argue about those things we think. We should engage the National Assembly in passing their laws. We should engage the judiciary in interpreting the laws on some of these issues that people consider are against a particular group or not. Now if you go to the court you may even get a judgment that resolves some of these issues. For instance, the Supreme Court ruled on the Niger Delta issue of onshore/offshore dichotomy. Obasanjo put in a political settlement and passed a law that allows the onshore to be recognised as part of the states, hence Akwa Ibom became the state getting the highest revenue in oil industry today.
The country has had history of resolving matters, politically. I remember the various lectures the then the Akwa Ibom governor, Victor Attah, gave; arguing how the people will not accept offshore/onshore dichotomy. This is what we demand of government and I think that what is going on in Igbo land is the absence of governments that aggregate the Igbo world view and expresses it to Nigeria. Because that way the people will feel okay. We resolve the Niger Delta problem by an amnesty put in place by Yar’Adua. The Niger Delta agitation starting from Ken Saro-Wiwa was resolved by a 13 per cent derivation principle. The June 12 scandal was resolved by allowing two Yoruba candidates to emerge from the two political parties in 1999. The political leadership must aggregate those views and express them in political terms to government in power. That is the failure of APGA. I think every Igbo man is tired of APGA. And I think that APGA with its vicious ideology has become a story of the past. Like in everything 12 years of sitting in power, I think the voters have run out of patience.
PT: What are your chances of winning the election. And if eventually you succeed what is it that you are bringing to the table in terms of governance that will be different from the normal rhetoric?
Chidoka: My chances are quite bright in the election and the reason is simple.
PT: Even when your party has no councillor, no local government chairman?
Chidoka: Yes, just like APGA in 2003, they had none of those when they won, just like Labour party in Ondo when they won; like Adams Oshiomhole winning when the whole PDP was in power in Edo State. He had no councillor. So, the country is replete with the experiences of people.
For the past one year, I have been in Anambra, I spent more of my time in Anambra and I have gone for setting up structures in every local government, in every ward in Anambra state, opening offices in the local governments, having volunteers turn up to me, working with me. So, the message I have is going down to the grassroots. And what am I offering them?Number one, I am offering them that their voice will be heard again in Nigeria that they can build bridges of knowledge and not of ignorance and fear.
Number two, I am offering them that we can modernise governance in Anambra. What it used to cost government to do certain things in the past is no more necessary. For instance, I am saying that in constructing roads in Anambra, in this year’s budget the governor had N24 billion out of the N50 billion in capital votes. N24 billion was for road construction understandably. But there was only about a billion naira for ICT and about N3 billion for education. And I thought that that’s a misnomer. In building the roads of the future, I will tie it together by digging up those roads, by laying fibre cables to bring down internet bandwidth to the people. The new highway we need is not just the physical roads but the internet bandwidth. That is what will unlock the potentials of Anambra who come first in WAEC every year, who has the highest number of people admitted to the university, who has the highest number of people studying engineering sciences in the Nigerian universities, So, what I want to do is to bring those attributes together, to bring a pot where these ingredients are brought together to unlock the value, and that value is being able to expose Anambra to the super highway that Anambra should be the home of programmers and coders, the home where  people can sit in and work for companies across the world without leaving the state.
The election is a referendum on our future, not on our past. We are not going to be talking about the government of the day. We are going to be presenting Anambra a choice for the future. Choose you this day whom you shall serve.
PT: IPOB said there should be no election and you are preparing. What is your take? Are you still going ahead?
Chidoka: I believe that IPOB can direct its members not to vote. But people who are not IPOB members will definitely go to vote. I don’t think that IPOB will reverse itself. I don’t think that boycotting the election in any form solves the problem of IPOB. Rather, I think IPOB has an opportunity to express their views at the ballot box of the type of leadership they want to see in Igbo land.

Alleged N30 trillion revenue scam: Fraudsters impersonating Senate committee members – Official

Hope Uzodinma
The Senate on Thursday alerted the public that some individuals were impersonating members of its committee investigating alleged N30 trillion import and export chain scam.
The Chairman of the Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, Hope Uzodinma, raised the alarm in a statement in Abuja.
He said the impostors were parading themselves to the companies being investigated over the alleged fraud as staff of the committee with the intent of extorting money from them.
“Let it be made abundantly clear that our committee has no person or agent holding brief for us on this all-important national assignment.
“Any individual or individuals claiming to be staff of the committee and soliciting favours or asking companies to pay money are impostors and criminals who should be promptly reported to relevant security agencies and promptly arrested.
“The committee was set up by the Senate with a strong mandate to investigate infractions leading to massive revenue leakages at the nation’s ports and help government recover those funds.
“Our mandate is not to serve as revenue collection agency for the Federal Government, but to unearth infractions and subsequently direct the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and other security agencies to recover such funds,” he said.
Mr. Uzodinma called on all companies currently under investigation by the committee to be fully guided.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will on Friday hold a National Executive Council meeting to determine the direction of the ongoing national strike, PREMIUM TIMES can report.
The meeting will be holdingafter national branches equally held meetings on Wednesday to decide on whether the strike should continue or not.
All branch chairmen are expected to be in Abuja on Thursday while the meeting is tentatively expected to end on Saturday after which a decision will be communicated to Nigerians.
When contacted on the planned meeting, the ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, said he would only speak after the meeting had been held.
“We cannot react now but after the NEC meeting we will speak on the developments,” he told PREMIUM TIMES on phone.
Several branch chairmen and officials spoken to declined to provide information on the decision of their branches on the strike, saying they had been asked not to speak to journalists.
“We held special congresses today. I cannot divulge outcome of the meeting but we held a meeting on the strike action,” Tomi Damson, secretary of Lagos State University branch of ASUU said.
The chairman of another branch of the union in a southern university also spoke on the interim report received from the branches.

“From the Southern part of the country and some parts of the North, universities voted for continuation of the strike; but we cannot tell now until after the meeting of NEC,” the don said.
The union went on strike on August 13 to protest against poor welfare and poor funding of universities, a move that led to the Federal Government inviting the body for negotiations. ASUU then sent the details of the negotiation to its branches for further deliberation.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu had expressed hope that the strike would be suspended this week.
In a related development, the Ibadan zone of the union has condemned the “continued victimisation of lecturers in University of Ilorin.”
The zonal coordinator, Ade Adejumo, who said this in a press statement alleged that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Ganiyu Ambali, was victimising ASUU members in the university, a situation he said could lead to further prolonging the ongoing national strike.
Attempts to reach Mr. Ambali proved abortive as he did not answer phone calls or reply messages sent to him.

Dangote to establish university in Abuja, earmarks N200 billion

Aliko Dangote
The President and founder of Dangote Foundation, Aliko Dangote, has set aside N200 billion to establish a world-class university in Abuja.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the proposal has since been delivered to the National Universities Commission, NUC.
A former Executive Secretary of the NUC, Julius Okojie, who is the chairman of the technical team for the establishment of the university, said the foundation intends to drive technology and research in stimulating economic growth.
Mr Okojie, who led his team to the current Executive Secretary of the commission, Abubakar Rasheed, said the proposed university is meant to be technology-driven and asked for the cooperation and support of the NUC towards the realisation of the goal.
According to a National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, publication, the team, accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer, CEO of the foundation, Zouera Yousouffou, disclosed that Mr. Dangote’s desire was to float a unique university of technology with all the necessary infrastructure and best faculty members from across the globe.
Mr. Rasheed, who applauded the bold step, promised to offer all the needed assistance for the success of the project.
He, however, advised the team to reconsider its plan of establishing a university of technology to ‘a conventional university running all programmes but with specialty in the area of technology.’
The executive secretary, who underscored the advantages of the conventional university over the special one, said with the countless impacts on society by the business mogul, the project would be a success.
He asked the team to consult widely and look at the universities in Nigeria and abroad with a view to creating a unique university that would be different in terms of quality in all its operations.
In her remarks, Mrs. Yousouffou said the foundation was ready to make the dream a reality with the sum of N200 billion already earmarked for the project.
She said the land was purchased and preliminary measures were in place for the headquarters of the university at the nation’s capital city of Abuja.
Mr. Dangote is a Nigerian mega-entrepreneur cum billionaire, who owns the Dangote Group, which has interests in diverse commodities.
The company with massive business tentacles operates principally in Nigeria but has corporate interests in other African countries.

Shiite IMN to boycott Nigerian govt panel probing rights abuses by military; question composition

Shiites Protest in Kaduna
Despite losing over 300 of its members after a massive clampdown by the Nigerian Army, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, has said it will not appear before a government panel established to review such rights abuses.
The hundreds of members of the Shiite group were killed in December 2015 in Zaria, Kaduna State, when the army clamped down on the IMN members after it accused them of blocking a road and plotting to kill the Chief of Army Staff.
The leader of the IMN, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, was also arrested and has been in government custody without trial since then.
Nobody has been prosecuted for the killings which was condemned by local and international human rights groups.
In what appears a response to agitations for an independent investigation into the killings and other such human rights abuses by the military, the federal government earlier this month set up a judicial commission to probe the abuses.
The commission, inaugurated by the then Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on August 11, has seven members and is headed by a justice of the court of appeal, Biobele Georgewill.
THE GRIEVANCES
However, two weeks before the panel is set to begin its public hearing, the IMN has said it will not appear or make any presentation before the panel.
The group questioned the credibility of the panel and said it would not appear before the panel unless its concerns are resolved.
In a petition dated August 17, addressed to Mr. Osinbajo and signed by Abdullahi Danladi, the group raised concerns about the composition of the panel.
“From the composition of this panel, it is noted that the military, the police and security agencies are all represented. This is not the case with the well-known community of victims of the alleged military violations such as us. With due respect to members in the panel, the “eyes” of the world renowned human rights bodies are also not on this panel.”
The petition seen by PREMIUM TIMES also accused the presidency of appointing a close ally to the army chief and a member that served in an earlier panel by Kaduna State as members of the panel.
“We noticed that even a member who served in the Kaduna state judicial commission is included. Similarly, another member who enjoys the confidence of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and who similarly served in the military investigation panel set up by the COAS himself that absolved the army of any wrongdoing has been included in this presidential panel as well. The sum of all this is that the independence and impartiality of this new panel is not in any way guaranteed.”
“In what ways will this Presidential Investigation Panel be different from what the judicial commission of inquiry into Zaria incident set up by the Kaduna State government? Beyond perhaps its scope (now also looking at other rights abuses by the military in other places and time) we note very many similarities, which do not instil confidence in the process,” Mr. Danladi said.
Although the group did not categorically state in its petition that it would not appear before the panel, its spokesperson, Ibrahim Musa, said the IMN would not appear. Mr. Musa said this in a follow up telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday.
THE PANEL
Mr. Osinbajo, when President Muhammadu Buhari was away on medical vacation, appointed the seven-member judicial commission.
He listed members of the judicial commission to include Mr. Georgewill as Chairman; and Patrick Akem, a major general, as member.
Other members are Wale Fapohunda, Hauwa Ibrahim, Jibrin Ibrahim, Ifeoma Nwakama, and a representative of the Office of the National Security Adviser.
“The Commission is expected to commence work immediately and submit its report within 90 days,” Mr. Osinbajo’s spokesperson, Laolu Akande, said.
The commission announced its schedule of public hearings and called for memoranda from affected persons and institutions on August 14. It will hold its public hearing in Abuja from September 7 to October 6.
